Who is it for?

New freedivers and experienced recreational freedivers who want to receive training and a recognised certification. Its a great entry level program and where most people like to start- as it will give you the safety skills to be able to carry on practicing with a buddy afterwards.

You should be a comfortable swimmer and in good health.

Outline

In this entry level courses course you acquire the proper skills and knowledge to participate in Freediving to depths of up to 60 ft. (20 meters) in the most relaxed and safe manner possible.

Learn proper breathing techniques, familiarise yourself with diaphragm breathing and take a deep breath like you never have before.

You will develop the skills necessary to train your body to be more efficient with breath-holding, gain better breathing techniques and muscle flexibility and learn new skills to take your Freediving to the next level. Most importantly it has a strong emphasis on learning the safety skills so that you can carry on with your practice beyond.

The level 1 course does have performance requirements, which it is important to take at your own pace, so if it means you need more time to practice, we will give you an SSI basic or pool certification and you can come back any time for some coached diving to practice some more for the level 1 upgrade. It is all about taking it at a pace that is right for you.

You will receive a certification from SSI.

Duration

2 days, meeting at 9 am and usually finished by 430 pm on both days.

Day 1, meet at Porthkerris to cover some theory, you will have a dry breathing session and two pool sessions (often run back to back). This gives you the skills of fundamentals to be ready for day 2. The second day you will have two dives in open water, we will always try to make sure that you have a little time to explore the beautiful reef at Porthkerris as well. By the end of the second day you will find your breath holds are longer, and you are much more comfortable exploring depths.

Location

Day 1 in the pool and classroom, if the weather permits we use the shallow water on the beach for skills, otherwise we are in the pool on site.

Day 2 in open water with Porthkerris Dive Centre. If the weather is too rough to get into the sea (we are normally very protected from anything but an east wind which is less common in summer) we have a lovely local quarry to use as a back up.
